How to Experience the Best of the Mountain for nearly Zero.
There is a common misconception that a memorable mountain getaway requires a heavy price tag. In reality, the true magic of Mentone—the crisp air, the sweeping views of the brow, and the quiet rhythm of the forest—doesn't cost a dime.
The greatest assets of Lookout Mountain are its natural wonders. If you are looking to stretch your budget without sacrificing the experience, here is a guide to enjoying an authentic, affordable Mentone escape.
1. The "Zero-Cost" Adventure
You can easily fill an entire weekend with world-class experiences without ever opening your wallet.
DeSoto State Park: Spend your morning exploring miles of hiking trails that wind through the Appalachian foothills. Stop at the park store and pick up maps of the trails.
DeSoto Falls: A visit to the iconic falls is a must. The roar of the water and the mist in the air provide a sensory experience that rivals any paid attraction. Parking is 4.00 at the falls but if you park at the trailhead about ½ mile BEFORE you get to the falls on the right, there is no charge.
Sunset at Brow Park: For the best seat in the house, head to Brow Park. It offers spectacular, long-range views of the valley below—perfect for a quiet moment of reflection and known for the beautiful sunsets.
2. Little River Canyon & The Rim Drive
Just a short drive away is Little River Canyon National Preserve, one of the deepest canyons in the Southeast and a true crown jewel of our region.
Little River Falls: Located right off Highway 35, this 45-foot waterfall is a "must-see." An accessible boardwalk leads you to an overlook where you can feel the power of the river as it begins its descent into the canyon.
Canyon Rim Drive (Hwy 176): This 11-mile scenic route features eight overlooks, each offering a unique perspective of the sheer rock walls. Be sure to stop at Mushroom Rock, a unique formation sitting right in the middle of the road.
Hiking the Canyon: For those who want to get their heart rate up, the Little Falls Trail is a moderate 0.75-mile hike that leads down to a beautiful sandstone shelf and swimming hole. If you prefer a gentler stroll, the Beaver Pond Trail offers a peaceful 1.5-mile loop through the woods.
The Secret Place: For those who want to venture a bit further, check out the Secret Place in Fort Payne. This private nature retreat offers a more secluded experience with stunning scenery, swimming in the creek, relaxing by the water and using provided equipment like hammocks and floats. It is essential to book ahead as it is not a public park. (just remember that reservations are required in advance. No animals and donations are accepted.) 256-605-4009
If you have the time…
Weatherington Park, a hidden gem located on highway 35 headed towards Scottsboro. This is a popular scenic spot on the brow of Sand Mountain known for its high vantage, panoramic, scenic, breathtaking and stunning sunset views of Lake Guntersville. Often visited by locals and travelers for picnics, relaxing and taking pictures.

3. Step Back in Time in Valley Head
Just down the mountain from Mentone lies the charming town of Valley Head. For those who love the hunt for a bargain or a piece of history, this is a budget-friendly goldmine.
Antiquing and Browsing: Stop by the local antique malls and shops—like the Daves Antiques. You can spend an entire afternoon wandering through aisles of vintage treasures, and Southern primitives. It’s essentially a walk-through museum of local history where browsing is totally free, and you might just find a unique keepsake at a fraction of a boutique price.
4. Picnic Like a Local
Dining out is a treat, but restaurant bills can add up quickly. One of the best ways to enjoy the scenery is to take your meal to go.
The Strategy: Grab groceries or local ingredients at Mentone Market. They have pre-packaged items that are ideal for picnics: Wraps, salads, sandwiches, potato salad etc.
The Spot: Pack a cooler and head to an overlook like Wolf Creek, Hawks Glide Brow or Desoto Falls. There is something uniquely special about a simple sandwich enjoyed while overlooking the vast expanse of the valley.

5. Meaningful Souvenirs
Shopping in Mentone is about quality, not quantity. Instead of filling a bag with mass-produced trinkets, consider budgeting for one special, locally made piece.
Art as an Experience: Visit the Mentone Arts Center to browse the work of local artisans. Think of it as a free gallery tour that enriches your understanding of our mountain culture.
Browse the Log Cabin Village at the center of town and Moon Lake Village further down 117. (Moon lake Village is the previous School in Mentone).
Spend some time on Fort Payne's “Main street” and check out the interesting, quirky shops. Don’t forget to take a pick with the Pete the Cat mural at the intersection of Gault Avenue North and 4th Street on the side of the Sawyer building.

6. Pack Like a Pro
The secret to a low-cost trip is preparation. By bringing the essentials with you, you avoid "convenience taxes" once you arrive.
The Checklist: Bring reusable water bottles, sturdy hiking boots or shoes, bug spray (yes we have ticks when the weather is warm), sunscreen and snacks. At Hitherside of Mountainwood cottage we provide a picnic basket and a spare backpack and vinyl cloth for the ground.
The Ultimate Savings Tip: Book Direct
The easiest way to save money happens before you even leave your house. By choosing to book direct with your host, you completely bypass the hefty service fees charged by third-party platforms. Those savings can easily cover your entire food budget for the weekend or fund that one-of-a-kind piece of local pottery you’ve been eyeing.
At the end of the day, the "Mentone experience" is about slowing down. Whether you’re watching the deer move through the morning mist, hunting for vintage finds in Valley Head, or watching the hawks glide over the canyon rim, the best memories made here are often the ones that are absolutely free.
Happy Trails!
