From the Peak to the Platform: Springtime at Mountainwood Cottages & Claudia’s Caboose

As the calendar turns, there is a specific kind of magic that happens in our corner of the world. It starts as a whisper in the high pines of Mountainwood Cottage and finishes with a shout of color at Claudia’s Caboose. Spring isn't just a season here; it’s a journey from the mountain to the valley.
The Mountain Thaw at Hitherside Cottage
Up at the cottage, spring arrives slowly, one quiet breath at a time. It’s the sight of those first brave daffodils pushing through the cold ground, stubborn and bright against the winter-worn earth. These pops of yellow are the first signal that the mountain is finally waking up after a VERY cold winter.
The wildlife is stirring, too. At Mountainwood Cottage, you might wake to the drumming of a pileated woodpecker or catch a glimpse of a deer family darting through the budding hardwoods and tall pines at the pond. The woods are suddenly alive with the "perch and whistle" of returning songbirds—bluebirds, chickadees and goldfinches adding their music to the fresh mountain air.
This is the season of "The Great Airing Out." We’re opening the windows to let the crisp mountain air chase away the winter stillness. If you’re visiting the cottage this month, it’s all about the transition—swapping heavy faux-fur throws for light cotton weaves and trading the fireplace’s embers for the bright morning sun on the deck. Oh we love the wood burning fireplace but as the days grow warmer, we sadly say goodbye to this year's fireplace season.
Then, "With shears in hand, we move among the rose bushes and azaleas, trimming away the old to make room for the new while honoring the resilience of everything that stood firm against the sub-zero winter chill."

The Valley Bloom at Claudia’s Caboose
Follow the winding road down the mountain, and you’ll find that the valley has already embraced the full vibrance of the season. At Claudia’s Caboose, the landscape is transforming before our eyes; the daffodils are blooming in bright, cheerful clusters, and the fescue is growing again, painting the ground in that unmistakable, velvet spring green.
The revival doesn’t stop at our doorstep..We are so lucky to be part of a community that truly celebrates growth—like our neighbors at Town Creek Farm right here in Valley Head. There is something so inspiring about watching their fields wake up; they are busy nurturing the very blooms that define a Southern spring. The tulips are blooming and it’s a must see “you pick” flower farm.

A Spring Break to Remember
With Spring Break just around the corner, there’s no better time to plan a family getaway. If you’re looking for a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience for the kids, a stay at the Caboose is pure magic. Imagine their faces as they realize they get to sleep and play in a real piece of railroad history! It’s the kind of adventure that turns a simple vacation into a lifelong memory, surrounded by the blooming beauty of the valley.
Springtime is a reminder that everything can begin again...
🚂...and there’s no better way to celebrate a fresh start than by bringing a piece of the season home with you. To help you "clear the tracks" for all things new, we are offering an April Springtime special at Claudia’s Caboose: 10% off the midweek rates, Monday -Thursday in the month of April.
